The interiors of these spinning settlements were maintained to provide pleasant weather and beautiful landscapes that were often more pleasing than what remained on Earth.Many of these settlements had been built close to resource-rich asteroids to take advantage of their raw material. Asteroids had proven to be such valuable sources of both metals and water that the settlers often were far wealthier than humans remaining on Earth.At one of the largest and richest settlements, robotic assemblers and human engineers were at work building the most ambitious project ever. Construction had started as soon as a probe had sent back signals from a nearby star system, showing water-rich planets and abundant asteroids. When completed, the starship and its human crew would begin the longest journey ever attempted. If all went according to plan, some day people in our solar system would be able to watch astronauts from the Armstrong walk on a world in another star system.One of the astronauts might even plant a flag.While the story of the world in 2469 seems far out, the key enabling technologies are being developed right now. Heres the state of development for space elevators, power satellites, asteroid mining, interplanetary propulsion, and space settlements.Space ElevatorMany engineers see the cost of delivering a payload to orbit as the biggest single stumbling block to developing space resources. Existing launch systems cost several thousand dollars per kilogram to get a payload into low Earth orbit. Companies that build partly reusable rockets, such as SpaceX, are aiming to get costs down in the $900-per-kg rangebetter, but still high.The ultimate solution may be to ditch rockets altogether. The concept of a so-called space elevator was invented independently in the 1960s and 1970s by Russian Yuri N. Artsutanov and American Jerome Pearson. Pearson calculated that a sufficiently strong tether cou ld stretch from the Earths surface to geosynchronous orbit and beyond specially built vehicles could climb up that ribbon and release payloads into space. It would take a week to get to geosynchronous orbit, but the cost savings would be worth it.Youre not going to get to $50 a kilogram using rockets, said Peter Swan, a mechanical engineer who is the chief operations officer of Zodiac Planetary Services in Paradise Valley, Ariz. For kenntnisse launches on the order of 20 metric tons a day, you need a space elevator.For decades, the concept foundered on the lack of a material capable of holding together as it dangles more than 35,000 km, but according to Swan, new carbon-based materials such as single-crystal graphene seem to have the requisite strengthin theory.We are on the path to tech-readiness, Swan said. What we need now is industry testing. One test has already begun Researchers from Shizuoka University in Japan last year sent an experiment to the International Space Station t o test some of the principles of an object climbing a tether in space, though its 11-m tether is made of steel.Swan is confident that before the end of this century, the first space elevator will be operating. By 2469, he believes, the people of Earth will see space elevators as freight railways to the sky.Power SatellitesSolar power is getting cheap, but it still can only generate electricity when the sun is up. That limitation led engineer Peter Glaser to develop (and patent in 1973) the concept of putting acres of solar panels on satellites in geosynchronous orbit and beam the power down to receiving stations on the Earths surface.Its a simple idea, and according to John C. Mankins, a former NASA physicist currently working in private space development, all the basic components have already been tested and are technologically ready. They havent been demonstrated in space applications, Mankins said, but theyve been demonstrated in terrestrial use or in the laboratory.Editors Pick The Race for Space WeaponsFor instance, Mankins said, beaming power to an antenna via microwaves was demonstrated in the lab in 1973, with a receiver efficiency above 90 percent. More recently, solid state power electronics have been developed to allow the transmitters to work with fewer losses.The first megawatt-scale demonstration could occur as early as the 2030s, Mankins said. Beyond that, the stumbling block is launch costs, which at present make the cost of power unaffordable. Until cheaper launches are available, the only way to get a large-scale power satellite system in place is by building them in orbit from space-based materials, which might not be possible for some decades, as the industrialization of space is still in its infancy.A constellation of power sats would help supplement Earth-based renewables, but Mankins says that such a power system might have the most value in space. You can process materials, you can mine asteroids, you can do very high power beaming of e nergy, Mankins said. If you have megawatts of power at low cost in spaceand other spacefaring countries dontyou win. By some estimates, there is enough mineral wealth in the asteroid belt to make every human a multi-billionaire. One frequently cited estimate suggests the value of minerals in the asteroid belt exceeding $700 quintillion, or $100 billion for every person currently living on Earth.Presented with the possibility of the grand-daddy of all gold rushes, private companieswith names like Planetary Resources, Deep Space Industries, and Planetoid Mines Companyare already looking to exploit those riches. Planetary Resources, for instance, announced in 2016 that it was developing a privately funded program to send a probe to an asteroid to prospect for minerals, with a launch date scheduled for next year. If all goes well, itor one of its several competitorscould begin exploiting minerals by before the end of the next decade.Exactly how to get at those minerals remains debatable. One scheme would send entire robotic processing plants to deep space to extract the valuable mineralsand volatiles such as waterwhich would then be shipped back to Earth. Another would hitch so-called space tractors to small asteroids and pull the whole object to Earth orbit to be mined.While the mineral wealth of the moon and asteroids may be beyond human imagination, its unlikely that it will replace resource extraction on Earth itself. The complication is how to bring tons of minerals down from Earth orbit in a safe and cost-effective way a mistake would produce an out-of-control meteor.According to Peter Swan of Zodiac Planetary Services, technologies such as a space elevator could support an inexpensive flow of material into orbit, but economically important space commodit ies will either stay in space or be massless like power or communications.Coming back is a real bear, Swan said. Space mineral resources are going to be used in situ. They are more valuable out where they are.Interplanetary PropulsionGetting to low orbit is a challenge today, but to fully exploreand exploitthe solar system, future generations will need a better way of crossing interplanetary space.Rockets have a severe limitation They must carry their own fuel, which adds mass to a spaceship, which then requires more fuel. To get a sense of the tooth-to-tail challenge, the 3,600 kg Juno probe now orbiting Jupiter was launched in 2011 by an Atlas V rocket loaded with 518,000 kg of fuel. And it still took five years to reach its destination.One approach to beating this problem is to create more efficient engines. A space-borne nuclear reactor (either fission- or fusion-based) could accelerate ionized gas particles either by heating the fuel directly in the reactor or by applying magne tic fields. Expelling this plasma at high speed, an atomic rocket would have a large specific impulsethe measure of rocket efficiency.In the next century, even more exotic propulsion systems may be developed. The tip of a space elevator tether that extended 50,000 km from the surface of the Earth would whip around at escape velocity a ship released from that point would just need a slight boost to reach Mars or beyond.Another concept currently being tested is a solar sail LightSail 2, a CubeSat experiment, which was launched in June. Its large, lightweight, shiny surface would reflect the intense sunlight hitting it. The reflected sunlight carries enough energy to cause the sail to accelerate ever-so slightly. The effect is small, but according to one early 1990s study, over time a spaceship equipped with a solar sail could reach more than 17 km per second, fast enough to reach Jupiter in less than two years.Space Settlements A space settlement, like this 20-mile-long cylinder, would spin to produce artificial gravity and use mirrors to bring in sunlight. Physicist Gerard K. ONeill envisioned settlements that would be home to millions of people. Image NASAUltimately, space will become a home for humanity. But where is the best place to settle?For nearly a century, people have had a vision of colonizing the Moon or Mars. But as robotic rovers collect more data about the surfaces of those worlds, they have become less inviting.An alternative was proposed by Princeton physicist Gerard K. ONeill in the mid-1970s spinning orbiting settlements that would produce artificial gravity via centripetal force and admit sunlight through shielded windows. ONeill envisioned very large settlements as homes to workers who would build and maintain power satellites by the late 1990s, giving these sky towns an economic rationale.It was considerably more ambitious than Apollo, said Al Globus, a senior research associate at San Jose State University, but it suited the mood of the time.Although ONeills original timeline has come and gone, Globus and others are still developing plans for settlements. Its visual because youre going to be looking at me and assessing my face and eye contact. And its also auditory because Im going to be saying my name toyou or at least saying the words, hi or hello. Its a bunch of information condensed down to just a few seconds of interaction. Its how we do a quick assessment of who the other person is.Here is the definitive general guide Dudley has studied on how you should handshake in the workplace in the United States1) StandNo matter whos who, older or younger, the best way to initiate a handshakeis to get on your feet and stand in front of the person, if your body is able, Dudley believes. Instead, the shoulder should stay stable as the elbow moves.In the U.S., workers typically pump their hands three times on average, Dudley said, while in several Asian and South American cultures, the pumping hand can come with a slight bow.6) Make direct eye contactThis is a requirement. You must give people your undivided attention in this one moment. When we go for a handshake, we look directly in the eyes of the person were shaking hands with- and nowhere else. While all of these unseen behaviors are happening in seconds, you have to keep in mind to say some sort of greeting or if its the first handshake, an introduction to who you are.There are advanced maneuvers like gently touching your other hand on top of your shaking hand as a sign of affection, but you should only do thisafter youve met someone.Then there are people who go too farpeople who take their left hand and clamp it over their right hand thats shaking yours are not your friend- they want to make you feel trapped.9) Keep in mind the power dynamics of reciprocal touchHeres a harsh truth about humanity outside of family or very close friends, we touch people more when we think we have more power than they do.If you look at who touches whom in the world, children get touched a lot more than adults, women get touched more than men, students get touched more than teachers, patients get touched more than doctors. So in other words, who touches whom is a function of who believes they have the power in the interaction, Dudley said. We dont want to ever touch people in a way thats non-reciprocal, where they dont feel free totouch us back.That means that when we touch other people, especially at work, we need to make sure its in a way that they feel comfortable touching us back.High-fives and fist bumps are creative h andshakes that are acceptable in the workplace because they can be reciprocated Theyre simply showing who my brothers and sisters and peeps are. Its a cultural bonding thing, Dudley said.Your supervisorpatting you on the back for a job well done, however, is a non-reciprocal touch. You cant pat him on the back too, after all. This interaction, though well-meaning, is non-reciprocal because theres no way you the employee can pat them back in this power dynamic. You see, youre the only part who really knows how much you do and how hard you work. For instance, when your colleagues charge the door at 5 PM, they dont know that you stay until 8 PM. When your boss is on the golf course, she doesnt know youre putting out fires at the office. A professional acquaintance of mine once explained that she often works evenings and weekends to tie up loose ends and make sure events go smoothly. In the middle of a performance evaluation, she realized her boss had no idea how much work she welches putting in after hours because he wasnt there- and she hadnt been telling him. She made a point of communicating her efforts more clearly and reaped the rewards in praise, pay, and promotions. It can be dangerous to your career to assume that the people around you are aware of your ha rd work and accomplishments. You have to promote yourself.I know- your parents taught you to be humble and that no one likes a blowhard. Theyre right. Boasting and bragging are obnoxious. But stay with me. To get ahead, you dont need to brag like a 10-year-old. You need to boast in a way that strikes the perfect balance between humility and confidence. Sound tricky? Well, it is- but with these tips, you can master the art of the professional brag. Offer More DetailsTo promote yourself effectively, you need to explain what youre doing without being obnoxious. So, for example, dont dominate a team meeting with a lengthy and detailed description of every single thing you did over the past week. However, dont pass up opportunities to discuss important accomplishments, either- simply use a well-thought out, succinct description. Say your boss asks for a project update during a meeting. An average answer might be, Its been a little hectic, but everything is coming along basically as plann ed and within our budget.A better, self-promotional- but still humble- answer could be, Ive been visiting the site regularly to ensure the project is progressing and to address any issues head-on. We did hit a snag a couple of weeks ago when we found out that some necessary materials were on backorder. It took some lengthy conversations at odd hours, but I was able to work with our contractor to identify a few other projects we could tackle while waiting on those materials. I also identified a new supplier who could provide the flooring, which was our most urgent need. Thats being installed as we speak. So, we are very close to our projected timeline and still on budget. See the difference? The first answer completely glosses over the odd hours and extra effort that kept the project from lagging behind- which your boss and team should absolutely be aware of.Document Your AccomplishmentsYou also need to be able to eloquently put your accomplishments in writing. Why? Many performance reviews include a self-evaluation portion, and whether or not youre actively looking for a new job, its a good idea to keep your LinkedIn profile and resume updated with recent achievements, too. Youll also want to be able to quickly reference documentation of your accomplishments when an opportunity for a raise or promotion comes up- so you can make a convincing case to your boss that youre the most deserving candidate.One of the biggest mistakes I see when people attempt to record their achievements is a failure to include enough detail. Yes, in writing, you should strive to be succinct. But if your descriptions are too brief, you arent doing yourself any favors.For example, maybe you list the following in your LinkedIn profile, under your job title of manager for Thetfords Office SupplyShift leaderHelped with trainingThese bullets dont tell your employer anything about what youve actually accomplished or what you are capable of. When you say you helped with training, does that me an you showed up to one sole training session and talked for 10 minutes? Or did you help design the curriculum and now present it to each new group of employees? A better description of the same location could includeSupervised 12 part-time associates, including managing schedules, leave requests, and performance evaluationsCollaborated with management to revamp new employee training, which contributed to a 10% reduction in turnoverWhen you fail to explain your accomplishments in detail, you leave your current (or potential) employer guessing- and that will never work out well when there are other employees or candidates who clearly spell out their qualifications. Tell the WorldOkay, maybe you dont need to brag to the entire world. But you do need to get comfortable talking about the work you do with people other than your direct supervisor. Remember, no one really knows what you do unless you tell him or her. Much of your success in the workplace depends on your relationships with your peers. But its not enough to simply be well liked your colleagues need to know that youre capable. Thats what opens the doors to new opportunities for collaboration- which can help you get noticed inside or outside of your company.Lets say a colleague says to you, Hey, I had a great time at the fundraising gala. You did a great job with it A typical humble response might be, Thanks I actually had a lot of help- Ill pass your compliment on to the team. A better way to promote yourself (while still being gracious) would be to say, Thanks Ill be sure to pass your praise along to the rest of the team. You know, I really had no idea how much behind-the-scenes work goes into booking a venue and band for such a large event. It really helped me learn a lot about managing timelines and professional contracts.Boom. You just dropped several key pieces of information Youre a quick learner when you come up against something new, you have valuable project and contract management skills, and youre a gracious person who passes praise along to her team. Now, your 20-second response has the potential to open the door to further conversation and opportunities. Being genuine, giving credit where its due, and sharing praise appropriately are important behaviors in the workplace. These behaviors will endear you to your colleagues and help you establish a good reputation. Williston Medal, has been extended to March 20 from the original closing date of March 1.The ASME Arthur L. Williston Medal, which was established in 1954, is presented annually to an engineering student or recent graduate for authoring the best paper in the area of civic service. The award competition is open to ASME student members as well as ASME members who received a baccalaureate degree no mora than two years prior to the submission deadline.The winner of the first prize will receive $1,000, a bronze medal, a certificate and a travel expense supplement to attend the award presentation at the ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE).
